Top Ten Reasons Why Sarongs Make Great Gifts

19-GB-1-COLLAGE BIG.jpg

Top 10 Reasons Sarongs Make Great Gifts!

  1. One Size Fits Most - Men women and kids use sarongs as wraps and one size fits most
  2. Affordable - Great value for the price
  3. Worthy Causes - Purchasing from 1 World Sarongs supports the artists and their families. Plus we donate a portion of our profits by planting trees through the ISHA foundation (planting over 100 trees in 2021)
  4. Vacation and Travel Buddy - Lightweight and fits in your purse or your backpack (use it on the airplane as a light blanket or quick coverup at the beach)
  5. Feel-Good Natural Fiber - Sarongs of rayon are made from plant fibers (not oil / petroleum-based like polyester, lycra etc.), so they feel a lot silkier on the skin, breath well, and in the end will quickly biodegrade back to the Earth

Teddy wanted to see more of the lake and boulders with lichen on them. So when he "fell" (went) into the water at the lake, we were thankful that mom had a dry half-sarong to continue on our journey.

6. Sunblock - Self explanatory and a must-have for those that want to keep the sun off without having to wear a ton of chemical sunblock

7. Scarf - For both women and men (easy to tuck into a jacket to seal up the cold air from getting in your zipper or button and feels super nice around the neck, not too bulky)

8. First Aid - Can be used as a tourniquet or sling or you can tie a sarong with an ice pack or heating pad onto your body

9. Seat Cover - Keep your seat clean or cover a dirty seat with a sarong

10. Meditation Pillow - Fold up and sit on your sarong to give you a little boost in your lotus

11. Limitless fun - Okay, we know this is #11, but how could we not add fun? You can have loads of fun with a sarong. Try combining two together or experiment with different styles and knots. Our kids make boots out of them, capes and even use them to pull each other around on wagons and skateboards. Parents use them to tie up their kids when they misbehave! Just kidding! Wives use them to keep their husbands at home ;-) and husbands use them to keep their wives happy at home! LOL, No matter how you use your sarong they're one of the most functional fashionable and fun items you will ever own. So have fun and enjoy life with your sarongs!

Thank you again for all of your support and happy holidays!!!

Thanksgiving: 10 Things We Are Grateful For This Year

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we made a list to celebrate gratitude. We're in our 16th year in business and we're so blessed to be able to say, it's been an amazing journey! Here are 10 things we are grateful for this year:

1)We had the means to sponsor several animal charities

We love nature and animals so we want to give back where we can. We got the opportunity to work with The Amanda Foundation and Orangutan Republic. If you know of any organizations or charity that we should work with, please point us to the right direction.

2) We were able to revamp our warehouse and corporate offices

We did a makeover of 1 World Sarongs Southern California location where we set up a new photo studio so we can explore our creativity and take better photos of all our collection

3) We cut out Palm Oil and we recycle within in our offices

Our mission is to assimilate the art of sustainability in our business practices and so we're trying to be more aware with our actions.

4) Family time

Where would I be without my wife and kids? Says owner Terry Sherry. We couldn't agree more. There's nothing more important than quality time with the people we love the most.

5) Faith in God and humanity

We maintain peace in our state of being and keep our core beliefs strong.

6) Great Customers both wholesale and retail

Loyal and supportive, nothing makes us happier than a happy customer! We are driven by what we do to bring happiness to all our customers.

7) Support and synergy within 1 World Family Team

More than just work colleagues, we are a family! We got a strong foundation of great people we work with both new and old.

8) Beautiful New Designs

Thanks to our amazing team of artisans we work with in Bali, we launched a range of floral and colorful sarongs plus clothing. With fresh prints and patterns in our new arrivals, we take our passion for art seriously and hope to continue hand making beautiful designs inspired by Mother Nature and our travel adventures. We also launched a new line for kids sarongs, added more plus size and men sarong styles

9) We redesigned our e-store and launched our new website

That's right, we finally got a makeover after a long time and it was a big step for us! We needed to take it slow and made sure we worked out the kinks so we can continue to keep our customers happy. One of the common feedback from our customers when they shop with us at 1 World Sarongs is that they wanted better features and categorization for all our products so they can browse at ease. You can now have a great shopping experience on our updated website plus enjoy other features like product reviews and create wishlists. What else do you like about our new site?

10) Beautiful office locations in both South California and Bali

We get to work and live in two amazing destinations both California, USA and Bali, Indonesia. Living the dream!

Have you ever tried this little activity? It's great practice to remind ourselves about the simple things that matter and how important it is to be thankful in order to live a purposeful live. Through this list of gratitude, you get to take a step back and evaluate what you've accomplished for the year and continue to make the best out of the remaining days of 2016 and aspire for bigger dreams in 2017. It's an act of mindfulness to help with clarity of the mind and to allow ourselves to reconnect with the self and our surroundings. Here's what you need to do to create a 'gratitude list':

1) Free up a couple of hours and find a safe space. This could be anywhere, be it at home or at a park or by the beach. Wherever the location may be, it's important that you feel safe where you are.

2) You will need a paper and pen, maybe a diary or journal. Avoid using computers or phones, the idea is to unplug from distractions.

3) When you're ready, sit still and close your eyes. Take deep breaths and continue to breathe for 5 minutes.

4) Once 5 minutes is up or whenever you feel at ease, open your eyes again and start writing. Every sentence should begin with - "I am thankful for........................"

5) Write from no.1 until no.10 whether you have less or more points, feel free to shorten or expand. What is key is that you continue to write without getting distracted and allow yourself to feel every memory and thought.

6) Take 30 minutes for this exercise. Take your time to write, do not force or rush the process. Once 30 minutes is up, take a step back. Then re-read your list again. You will be amazed by what you've written and you will start to think about the people in your life that you've given thanks to.

Try it out and tell us what you think! How did it feel? We would love to hear from you. Leave us a comment below.

10 Inspirational Quotes for Earth Day

Happy Earth Day, folks! If you don't know by now, Earth Day falls on April 22 this year and we fully support a movement that continues to cultivate ideas and inspire humanity to action. We believe that Earth Day is more than just a day, it's a long term commitment and the values we have should be more than just words. The challenge is to transmit thoughts into action and to remind ourselves that sustainability is more than just an idea, it is a way of life.

Our passion and love for Mother Earth is nothing new and we would like to share our 10 favorite and powerful quotes for Earth Day:

  1. "Trees are Earth's endless effort to speak to the listening heaven." - Rabindranath Tagore

  2. "The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope. The earth is what we all have in common." - Wendell Berry

  3. "The truth is: the natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water and air. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it." - David Attenborough

  4. "Harmony with land is like harmony with a friend; you cannot cherish his right hand and chop off his left." - Aldo Leopold

  5. "We cannot hope to create a sustainable culture with any but sustainable souls." - Derrick Jensen

  6. "There's no doomsday scheme made specifically for mankind, only higher agenda and priority than human race preservation." - Toba Beta

  7. "Having the right priorities in a wrong world will humble you with a journey that only love can sustain." - Bryant McGill

  8. "No one is an environmentalist by birth. It is only your path, your life, your travels that awaken you". - Yann Arthus-Bertrand

  9. "Our environment, the world in which we live and work, is a mirror of our attitudes and expectations." - Earl Nightingale

  10. "Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed." - Mahatma Gandhi

A Mission Statement Focused on Sustainability

Happy New Year! 1 World Sarongs is 15 years old this year! We are proud to say, in 2013 and 2014 we had a healthy increase in our business, we introduced many new products successfully and our customers continue to praise us for our great service and the value we provide to them. We believe that it's a good practice to look back at where we have been and where we are going.

We have been thinking about our mission of creating sustainable businesses. We strongly believe that together with our combined ideas, energy and actions - we can have a much greater effect on our mission! Every day we ask ourselves - How do we be Earth friendly and people friendly and have fun doing it?

Our mission statement is to create a sustainable business by focusing on these points:
  • Be gentle on earth - what is our impact/ footprint on our planet?
  • Utilize technology - print only if necessary, so no printed catalog or printed materials – internet only
  • Recycling materials - create uses for excess material
  • Use less material - maximize fabric cutting
  • Efficient shipping methods - sea cargo verse air cargo
  • Earth Friendly - create and source products that are Earth friendly and renewable (coconut, bamboo, etc)
  • Donate to charities such as Union of Concerned Scientist, The Amazon Foundation, American Red Cross and the Rotary and Oceana, etc.
  • Create a product that benefits a certain cause
  • People Friendly
  • Fair wages / Fair trade
  • Healthy working environments
  • Support educational programs
  • Give back to the community by getting involved with causes that help local communities
  • Get involved with beach clean-ups
  • Art Friendly - music, dance
  • Supporting and respecting cultural traditions - Create and source handmade items like batik, embroidery, beading, tie dye, fringing, hand screen printing, hand dyed etc.

So let's think about:

1.    How do we contribute to the solution of creating a better world and yet maintain and increase our living standard?
2.    What are the problems and solutions?
3.    How do we create value that is long lasting?
4.    How do we create relationships that have meaning and provide growth and value?
5.    How do we make it better for all that are involved?
6.    Who has a thought, idea or suggestion on how to accomplish our mission?

As we once heard, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. We truly believe we can make a big difference together. All ideas, thoughts and comments are very much appreciated! We're always happy to hear from you and so you can drop us an email.

Thanks for reading!

With love & peace,

How to Wash a Sarong?

Similar to our initial advice on how to care for a sarong , we've taken further investigation by talking to our loyal 1 World Sarongs customers as well as doing tons of reading on other reliable sarong resources to get the first dips on the best way to wash a sarong.

We all use our sarongs in the most versatile way and having them exposed to all kinds of environment makes you wonder - what's the best way to keep them clean and fresh at all times? The key is to maintain your sarongs in the best way possible so that it stays in its best condition and you can have long lasting sarongs.

The first step is to find out how delicate is the clothing and so you can ask yourself: what fabric or material is the Sarong? It's always important to determine the fabric or material - are you washing a batik, silk, polyester, cotton or rayon sarong? It's also important to check whether you're washing a sarong with fringe or fringeless sarongs.

So far the most important and consistent tip that we found useful is that using COLD WATER (or low temperature water, if you must) is the best way to wash your sarongs.

Why?

Well, most people would use hot water wash to effectively remove heavy dirt or germs but the downfall in using hot water is that your clothes are prone to higher risk of wrinkle, shrinking or fading especially for your vibrant and strong colored sarongs. The positive factor in using cold or low temperature water when washing is that you get to protect your delicate sarongs and ensure that the color quality of your sarongs are well-maintained.

Another cool factor about avoiding hot temperature machine wash is that you get to conserve energy, avoid wastage and do your part in saving the environment with less carbon footprints on Earth. That's because setting your washing machine at hot temperature requires more electricity to heat than using unheated water and saving electricity also means you get to save money!

Hand Wash Tips

This is probably the most efficient and effective Sarong washing method. It's the best way to wash your sarong AND the most environmental friendly practice too. If you have read our sarong labels you would already know that it's the correct way to care for your sarong and here's what we think:

1) If you want to use hot or warm water, keep the soak duration at a minimal period (maximum 60 minutes) and if you use cold water, feel free to use longer soaking hours (overnight soak is fine) to help remove stains or heavy dirt.

2) Use very minimal or no detergent at all. Besides, using less chemicals is the least we can do to help protect our Earth! If you insist to have your clean sarongs smell like fragrance then we would like to suggest a little DIY home project for you. Why not create your own non-toxic home made natural laundry detergent? Get instructions on how to make your very own natural laundry detergent.

3) Don't over do the rubbing, a gently kneading is sufficient. (So avoid washing your sarongs when feeling temperamental or angry)

4) Avoid soaking your colored sarongs with any white clothing. (Unless you plan to get into a tie dye project :))

Machine Wash Tips

While we always encourage our customers to stick to hand wash (as instructed on our sarong labels!), some of you might still prefer to save time and effort by tossing your sarongs into the machine for a wash and if that's the case, here are some advice:

1) Wash separately from other clothing (especially for first time wash), consequently make sure you wash your sarong following the basic rule of laundry - always separate the clothing by colors.

2) Set the machine at preferably cold or low temperature.

3) Minimal wash cycles and rinses work best for your light weight sarongs. There's no point in over washing your sarongs due to its breathable and delicate material unless if you're washing cotton sarongs.

4) Use very little detergent because sarong fabrics are not thick, so you might as well save up on detergent.

LOL

Finally, now that your sarongs are all washed and cleaned, the final step is to get it dry and ready for your next usage. So the question is..

Property of 1 World Sarongs
How to dry your Sarongs?

1) For longer lasting sarongs, try to avoid using a dryer for your sarongs, hang drying a sarong is the best method.

2) If you hang dry your sarong correctly, you can avoid creases and skip the ironing process.

3) Get your wet sarongs hung out on a bright sunny day and it'll only take a few hours for them to get dry to to it's breathable fabric!

So now that we've shared our insights on how to wash your sarongs, we hope that you'll use these tips to care for your sarong. If you have ideas or tips or personal experiences on how to wash a sarong, please do leave us a feedback!

Sarongs for Men - Forever Fashionable.

That's right. We don't leave the boys out when it comes to men sarong fashion! Our new arrivals include a collection of sarongs that are ideal for men who love to be free and who are confident enough to own a sarong! We've spoken about men sarong history before and so sarongs are really nothing new to a man's world of fashion.

Presenting our new arrivals of sarongs for men which are equipped with a variety of designs of print & colors. Be it solid color, animal prints, Celtic designs, traditional style or abstract, we've got it all to suit a range of personalities!

How would a man wear a sarong? Well, the best way to enjoy wearing a sarong is to wear it bare and that means going shirtless and commando!

In terms of men's style, you could style up with very minimal men's jewelry like a necklace or bracelet along with a pair of beach sandals or flip flops or just go barefoot! It's entirely up to your personality and fashion preference. We are noticing that sarong for men fashion never goes out of trend as you would see it on some runway fashion shows.

So what's the big deal, you'd wonder? We already know that sarongs were traditionally and culturally worn by men for centuries from different parts of the world and we are also used to the sight of hippie, traveler or bohemian dudes in sarongs.
Our believe is that sarongs are made for all men from all walks of life! Now what we'd really love to see more of would be a variation in style where sarongs for men are jazzed up to everyday casual wear or even street fashion be it at the beach or in the city. With simplicity at its best, a sarong on a man looks great when paired with a plain colored t-shirt or a casual white shirt. Pairing a sarong with a formal shirt could also be very fitting depending on the occasion and how you wear the sarong! For those who are a bit more daring than usual, you could play around with printed sarongs and plain colored shirts and match it up with some eclectic jewelry.
And where would men wear sarongs? We do think it's time to break the norm, steer away from stereotypes and perhaps try to wear sarongs on an everyday basis aside from the comfort of a vacation or by the beach.  Typically sarongs are worn by men when they are at home or at the beach or as a cover up on a nude beach or by the pool or on a cruise.

We hear that it's the most comfortable thing to wear especially during the summer, as to quote one of 1 World Sarongs customer who once said, "There's nothing more liberating in this world than to have the freedom of bare necessities", John Cooper. Well said, John!  :)

What are your thoughts on sarongs for men? We'd love to hear your ideas for fashion & style or simply leave us your feedback on the thought of a man in a sarong.
